Through layering glazes, this mug features a striking transition from deep charcoal-black to a soft, speckled stone-beige, creating a natural, organic gradient reminiscent of an echidna wandering between shadow and scrub. The reactive speckling adds depth and texture, giving the surface a gently weathered, earthy character while maintaining a smooth, refined touch. The matte-to-satin finish enhances the mug’s tactile appeal, perfectly framing the hand-mounted echidna tile and giving the piece a grounded, quietly adventurous feel. High-fired stoneware finished in our signature chino-inspired gradient glazes. Craftsmanship process Wandering Echidna Mug in the newAustralian animal series begins its life on the potter’s wheel, formed by hand in clay or porcelain before being coated—inside and out — in food-safe glazes. The small animal tiles are kept unglazed to preserve the raw tactility of the clay. These tiles start as digital 3D sculptures, which are then 3D-printed, moulded in clay, and carefully attached by hand to each vessel. Our Poppy & Pepper mark is applied either through firing or laser engraving on the base.
